Van Mahotsav at SSI: 100 Saplings, 100 Young Guardians of the Aravallis
Some lessons cannot be taught on a whiteboard. They have to be planted.
This July, as the first monsoon showers turned the Aravalli hills around our campus a deep green, the students of Shree Shakti School of Innovation stepped out of their classrooms and into the soil. Van Mahotsav, India's festival of forests, became a week of learning by doing — exactly the kind of education SSI was built for.
What We Celebrated
Van Mahotsav is observed across India in the first week of July, a tradition started in 1950 to make tree plantation a people's movement. At SSI, we treat it as far more than a symbolic event. Every student, from our youngest learners to our senior classes, planted and adopted a sapling on campus.
One hundred native saplings went into the ground—neem, peepal, amla, jamun, and flowering species chosen because they belong to this land and feed its birds and butterflies. Each sapling now carries the name of the student responsible for it. Watering it, checking its leaves, and watching it grow is now part of that child's routine.
Why This Matters Deeply for Our Children
At SSI, we believe biodiversity is pedagogy. The campus itself, with its Oxyzone Park and open Aravalli surroundings, is a living syllabus. When a child plants a tree and takes responsibility for its survival, several things happen at once that no textbook chapter on the environment can achieve.
The child learns patience, because a sapling does not grow on demand. The child learns observation, because wilting leaves ask questions before they give answers. And the child learns care, because a living thing now depends on them.
This experience nurtures all five layers of a child's being—the Panchakosha:
- Annamaya Kosha: Physical work with soil, water, and weather builds strength and groundedness.
- Pranamaya Kosha: Time in fresh monsoon air, among living green things, restores vital energy.
- Manomaya Kosha: Caring for a sapling develops emotional attachment, empathy, and responsibility.
- Vijnanmaya Kosha: Students study soil, root systems, native species, and rainfall—real science with real stakes.
- Anandmaya Kosha: The simple joy of watching something you planted come alive.
How the Week Unfolded
The celebration began with a morning assembly where students shared why forests matter to Gujarat, from the Aravallis that shelter Ambaji to the Gir forests further south. Classes then moved outdoors. Younger children prepared pits and learned how deep a sapling should sit. Older students mapped plantation spots, calculated spacing, and researched which species suit rocky Aravalli soil.
In Srujan Kendra, our innovation space, students designed simple drip-watering bottles from reused materials so their saplings survive the dry weeks after the monsoon. A small idea, built by small hands, solving a real problem. That is innovation as we understand it.

A Promise Beyond One Week
Van Mahotsav at SSI does not end when the festival week ends. Each sapling's growth will be tracked through the year in student nature journals. Survival counts will be reviewed each term, and students whose trees thrive will mentor the next batch of young planters.
This is what we mean when we say SSI is a school that does not school. The lesson is not "trees are important." The lesson is a living tree, growing on our campus, because a child kept a promise.
