Every year in early July, the quiet monsoon roads to our campus fill with cars, suitcases, and a very particular mix of emotions. Excitement in the children returning to friends. Nervousness in the children arriving for the first time. And in every parent's eyes, the same question: Will my child be okay here?

Arrival Day: Names, Not Numbers
Arrival day at SSI is deliberately unhurried. Families are received by house parents — the resident adults who live alongside our boarders and care for them daily. Each child is welcomed by name, shown to their room, and introduced to their roommates before parents leave.
Parents tour the dormitories, dining hall, and medical room with their child. Nothing is hidden. We want every parent to leave with a clear picture of where their child will sleep, eat, and be cared for, because trust is built on specifics, not brochures.
The Buddy System: No One Settles In Alone
Every new boarder is paired with a returning student buddy for their first month. The buddy sits with them at meals, walks with them to classes, and answers the hundred small questions new children hesitate to ask adults: Where do we keep shoes? When is fruit served? Which tap has the coldest water?
Returning students take this role seriously — many remember being new themselves. For them, it is leadership through service, the same principle we honor at our investiture ceremony. For the new child, it means belonging begins on day one.
The First Week: Routine as Reassurance
Children settle fastest when days are predictable. The first week follows the full boarding rhythm from the start: morning exercise and yoga in the open air, breakfast together, classes, games in the evening, supervised study, and a fixed lights-out.
House parents watch each new child closely during this week. Appetite, sleep, participation — these tell us more than words. A child who is quiet at dinner gets a house parent sitting beside them the next morning, without any fuss being made.
How We Handle Homesickness
We will not pretend homesickness does not exist. It does, and it is normal. What matters is how it is handled.
At SSI, new boarders speak with their parents on a fixed calling schedule, and house parents update parents proactively during the settling-in period. Missing home is treated as a feeling to be acknowledged, never a weakness to be hidden. In our experience, the combination of routine, friendship, and honest adult attention carries almost every child from tears to belonging within the first few weeks.
This settling-in journey touches every layer of the Panchakosha—physical routine (Annamaya), fresh air energy (Pranamaya), emotional security (Manomaya), growing independence (Vijnanmaya), and finally, the quiet joy of belonging (Anandmaya).
